The Society of Medical Biochemists of Serbia was recognised in 1955. Firstly, the Section for Hygienic Chemistry of the Serbian Pharmaceutical Society, merging medical biochemists, sanitary chemists and toxicologists, was established on January 1st, 1951. Later on this Section raised to become the Serbian Section for Medical Biochemistry, the 1st President Dr. Pavle Trpinac. in 15 May 1955. Biochemistry of Yugoslav Pharmaceuical Society that was retitled into Yugoslav Society for the Medical Biochemistry through Society Meeting held on 15th May 1965 in Banjaluka. In May 1971, the Society of Medical Biochemists of Yugoslavia developed with 28th member of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC). The Society of Medical Biochemists of Serbia and Montenegro becomes member of the FESCC, now European Federation for Clinical Chemistry and Research laboratory Medicine (EFLM).
In 2006 the Society was retitled to the Society of Medical Biochemists of Serbia. The Society is track by the Executive Board and the Assembly and acts through many committees standardization, organization and technology of laboratory services, worth control, as well as excellence management and accreditation, supporting with industry, history of medical biochemistry and clinical chemistry, honour committee, ethics committee, and committee for assistance with IFCC, EFCC, BCLF, and related organization in country and abroad.
Since the formation of the Society has undertaken significant activities in all fields of clinical chemistry according to the procedures and orientation of the IFCC. The main activities of the Society are in the field of education, and the organization of laboratory facilities, outside quality control, conferences and publishing. In association with the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Society has developed education programs for undergraduate and postgraduate clinical chemists concluded which fulltime 5-year studies for medical biochemists and subsequent 4-year advanced working out are being successfully completed.
