United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society (UKEMS)

It was regularly described as the 1st Annual Meeting of the UK Branch of the European Environmental Mutagenesis Society (EEMS). Today UKEMS is a member association of the EEMS and an International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies (IAEMS). The UKEMS, as the UK branch of the European Environmental Mutagen Society (EEMS), remain to serve those scientists working in the UK in the area of DNA bruise and mutations caused by environmental agents (chemicals and radiation). It encircles academic research into the mechanisms and consequences of mutagenesis, and applications of this knowledge to the trialing of novel pharmaceutical, industrial and agricultural chemicals for genotoxic effects. The specialist fields of molecular epidemiology (looking specifically at the implications of DNA damage and mutation for human health) and industrial genotoxicology have their own sections in a period the Society. Young members of the society are given incentives to contribute to its meetings and to expand their knowledge. Good communications within the society and a active financial state facilitate the promotion of the society's ambitions. We actively encourage members from all parts of UKEMS to stand for election to the cabinet when vacancies arise. Contested elections are a sure way of maintaining the condition of the officers serving the society. UKEMS runs an annual scientific meeting, about 3 days long, sometimes united with a meeting of another related society such as the Genome Stability Network or the British Toxicology Society (BTS). The society has continued to hold its annual meeting at universities in the UK since 1977, on some occasions playing moderator to the annual meeting of EEMS or arranging the meeting as a satellite to the 4-yearly Global Conference on Environmental Mutagens (ICEM) when the following was adhered in France in 1977. There are currently around 300 active employees of the society, a balanced mixture of scientists working in academia and industry. In 1986 UKEMS founded the journal Mutagenesis.
