Multiple myeloma also known as plasma cell myeloma or Kahler's disease .It is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell normally responsible for producing antibodies. In multiple myeloma, collections of abnormal plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, where they interfere with the production of normal blood cells. Bisphosphonate treatment is often started along with chemo. If the areas of damaged bone continue to cause symptoms, radiation therapy may be used.
The etiology is poorly understood. This depends partly upon the fact that the risk factors which play a major role for malignant diseases in general, such as tobacco consumption and diet have not been found strongly involved into multiple myeloma etiology. However IgD myeloma appeared to be more common here and it tended to be more advanced at presentation. Objective response rate to treatment with the melphalan-prednisolone combination was about 40% with a median survival of 18 months.
