     Typhus is any of several similar diseases caused by Rickettsia bacteria.The name comes from the Greek typhos (τ?φος) meaning smoky or hazy, describing the state of mind of those affected with typhus. The causative organism Rickettsia is an obligate intracellular parasitic bacterium that cannot survive for long outside living cells.The onset of epidemic typhus is often sudden and can include fever, headache, chills and malaise.In approximately 50% of cases, a rash develops after 5to 6 days. Small pink macules usually appear first on the upper trunk or axillae then spread to the entire body with the exception of the face, palms and soles.
