Anita C. All has completed an AD in nursing from the Indiana University, a BSN from the University of Wyoming, and a MS and Ph.D. from the University of Northern Colorado. She has a publication record over 50 peer-reviewed publications and over 75 peer-reviewed presentations at all level of venues but particularly at the national level. Dr. All serves as a peer-reviewed for several high level journals and serves as chair or reviewer of multiple federal governments grant reviews with the Bureau of Health Professions.
Despite years of being present in university settings many still question that nursing legitimately belongs in the world of higher education. Th is is not limited to the United States and research/evidence can be found in other countries on this topic, e.g. Ireland and Australian. In a fi ft een -minute literature search this author found 15 relevant current articles on leadership development in academic nursing, frameworks for leadership development, evidence-based practice and the importance of leadership and education, and the impact of leadership and social justice on service-learning and nursing education. Much of the current focus is on leadership styles and theories and that there should be one that will meet all situations. Th ere are several theories that are considered contemporary theories of leadership (Quantum Leadership, Transactional Leadership. Transformational Leadership, Shared Leadership, Servant Leadership, and Emotional Leadership). Of these contemporary theories Transformational Leadership is receiving much support due to the American Nurses Credentialing Center MAGNET Recognition program. Th is presentation will describe and defi ne contemporary leadership styles and theories. Additionally, the presentation will describe situations where one style might be used versus another style and describe how nursing education can utilize diff erent leadership skills to make a diff erence in the macro system of the academic setting but also at the micro level with students, therefore resulting in an increase in quality patient care and in healthcare policy development and involvement. In addition the presentation will address the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation of leadership education in nursing education in terms of current healthcare reform issues.
