Title: Advanced minimally invasive surgery for gastrointestinal cancer, beyond dogma

Biography

Cherif N. Boutros, Chief of Surgical Oncology at BWMC received his medical degree from Alexandria University in Egypt and completed a full surgical training as well as a Master of Surgical Science at Paris University. He completed an internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital of Columbia University in New York City and residency in general surgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey. He also completed an accredited surgical oncology fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence Rhode Island and received additional training in hepatobilary and pancreatic surgery at the Hepatobiliary Center at Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris, France. He has a special interest in the treatment and research of gastrointestinal surgical pathologies and hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers.

Abstract

Interestingly, recent big achievements in cancer care were only possible by better understanding small molecules, proteins and pathways at the cellular level. As molecular genetics and nanotechnology represent the major recent advance in understanding cancer biology, minimally invasive approach represents the new surgical paradigm shift for cancer care. Current indications of minimally invasive surgical oncology challenge dogma for open complex approach. At the same time, new diagnostic tools and screening programs allowed to identify an increasing number of incidental lesions that may represent an early stage cancer or premalignant conditions challenging both the physician and the global health system for better management strategy and favor a less invasive approach.
When feasible, benefits of the minimally invasive approach include less blood loss, postoperative pain and narcotics requirement, early recovery and less length of stay. As the model of colon cancer was well analyzed by the surgical community, further indications of the minimally invasive approach to gastrointestinal cancer did follow and included more complex gastric, hepatic and pancreatic resections.
This presentation will discuss and shows, through multiple educational videos, different approached and techniques of minimally invasive surgery in selected patients with a wide range of digestive system cancer or premalignant pathologies including laparoscopic and robotic assisted gastric,hepatic, pancreatic and colorectal resection.
