Distillery spent wash is considered as a major environmental threat for its low pH, high COD, BOD value, dark brown colour and odour. However, due to rich source of organic matter and nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and sulfur, spent wash can be utilize as energy source as well as fertilizer if managed properly. Anaerobic digestion is most accepted primary method for spent wash treatment since its pollution load reduction and biogas recovery potential. Presented study was conducted to exploring the suitability of spent wash for their methane production efficiency and utilization as a fertilizer for sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). Result of this study suggested that methane production rate is corresponding to the digester feed and COD value of the spent wash. Application of the spent wash after anaerobic digestion with different dilution showed positive response on investigated growth parameters of experimental crop. Study suggested that 50% dilution of anaerobic digested spent wash is best suited for the tested growth parameters.
