Manoj K Patairiya did his M.Sc. in Zoology with specialization in Environmental Biology and M.B.A. in Human Resource Development. He has the honor of having the first Ph.D. in Science Communication in India. He studied Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP) at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA. Dr. Patairiya’s interests include linking science to masses using all possible modes of public outreach. He is decorated with several prestigious national and international awards. Dr. Patairiya is the Founder Editor of the Indian Journal of Science Communication, President of the Indian Science Writers’ Association and Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Network on Public Communication of Science & Technology (PCST), Australia. He presents a weekly agriculture programme “Krishi Darshan” on India’s National TV Channel “Doordarshan”. Dr. Patairiya has a large number of high standard research and popular science publications and two Indian Patents to his credit. He is a Visiting Professor of Science Communication at National University of South Korea.
The world is now focusing on the younger generation to prepare and motivate them so that they can become more responsible citizens of tomorrow with an orientation towards environment friendly approach. In order to achieve this, we are trying influence the thinking process of our young leaders and to shape their action. This is an important task that the scientist, environmentalists, educators, administrators and policy makers have to take seriously. The paper discusses some practical aspects for furthering the process of not only influencing the thinking and action of the children but also developing and inculcating the capacity and scientific approach enabling them to take more rational, analytical and appropriate decisions in terms of environmental protection and bio-resources conservation. The term ‘greener’ has become synonym of the phrase ‘environment friendly’. Generally, it is believed that anything that is greener is environment friendly, but technically it is not true all the time. Similarly, environment does not necessarily cover only greenery, but it covers a number of things which are physically not green, like air, water, soil, sunlight, animals and our classroom, etc. We must understand and appreciate our environment in much wider terms. It ranges from your living room to outer space. In order to maintain, conserve, preserve, organize, manage, prosper and harness our environment in a balanced and systematic manner, we need to develop the skill and attitude together so that we are able to adopt an environment friendly or greener approach. Bio-diversity forms an important part of our environment that includes plants, animals and other life forms. We have to be more cautious, innovative and prepared to be able to face the present and future challenges and to lead towards a greener tomorrow.
