Mark N. Scheinberg graduated S.U.N.Y at Buffalo School of Medicine 1973, completed residency in OB/GYN at the George Washington University Medical Center in 1978, and was Board Certified in 1981. He has received advanced training in cosmetic-plastic-gynecology (C-P-G) by internationally known Professor Adam Ostrzenski M.D., Ph.D. and has been an invited speaker on Cosmetic Plastic Gynecology topics at conferences and seminars in seven countries including FIGO XX 2012 in Rome, Italy.
Aims: Review the current state of education, research and publications in the field of cosmetic-plastic surgery
Methods: A review was performed using Medline, Pubmed, ACOG resources, recent reviews and presentations.
Results: There are no formal Gynecological residencies or fellowship programs identified offering CPG training. Several individual practitioners offer instruction on CPG techniques but there are no standard or generally "accepted" procedures. There is increasing interest in the C-P-G community but although there are an increasing number of articles there is still a paucity of evidence based studies in scientific peer reviewed journals. Inconsistent and deceptive terminology is common and causes confusion for both practitioners and patients.
Discussion: CPG is still in its infancy with interest shown by gynecologists, urogynecologists, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, and urologists. There are no formal training programs, standard or accepted procedures and there is a lack of consistency in terminology and practice opening the field to attack. Standardization of nomenclature, descriptive terms for procedures and better scientific based research can enhance the recognition of the field.
