Title: Keratin waste: A valuable resource for pharmaceutical and forensic applications

Biography

Ramiz Boulos has completed his PhD at the age of 28 years from The University of Western Australia and Postdoctoral studies from The University of Western Australia and Flinders University, South Australia. He is also the CEO of Boulos & Cooper Pharmaceuticals, an Australian company developing a new class of antibiotics with a novel target.

Abstract

In this talk, I will discuss the use of keratin waste from animal hair, such as wool, with its inherent hierarchical structure contributing to its structural complexity and non-biodegradability, as a starting material for developing novel applications and products with a high-end value. Using discarded wool and other animal fibres has the added advantage of being a renewable feedstock for developing sustainable technologies for the future. The basic process under research, dissolution of hair, also offers significant benefits to forensic science, as human hairs are a common item of evidence.
