Stela Halichidis is a director in the Department of Medical Faculty at Ovidius University, Romania. She was head of HIV department, Constanta, Romania. She has published various papers related to HIV, and is member in many national and international medical associations (ESCMID, ESC, Romanian Infectious Diseases Society, Balcanic Medical Society, Romanian Parasitology Society, International AIDS Society, and Balkan Environmental Association).


Constanta is one of the most affected counties by HIV from Romania. In the last years we noticed an increasing number of children exposed to HIV and HBV through mother-to-child transmission. The objective of the study is to assess mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rate of HIV, HBV and other STI over a period of 5 years and 8 months (1st January 2008 – 27th August 2013). Retrospective study about relevant parameters in new born and mothers like duration and type of combined antiretroviral treatment (cART), ELISA-HIV, HBsAg, HBsAb, and HIV viral load (VL), syphilis serology are done. Statistical analysis was performed using MedCalc Software 2013. Over a period of 5 years and 8 months, 124 new born from 97 HIV+ mothers have been monitored. Only one pair mother - new born presented positive syphilis serology. Both of them received treatment with Penicillin G, with good evolution. 6 mothers were with HIV and HBV co-infection but none of them transmitted any disease in their children. The MTCT rate was 4%. In studied period, mortality rate in children was 5.6%, and mother´s mortality rate was 6.1%. 97.5% children received cART after birth, and 93.1 mothers received cART during pregnancy. At delivery, mothers´ CD4 mean value was 392/mmc (95% CI for the mean 287.1 to 497.0) and VL mean was 10136 copies/ml. HIV transmission in new born is associated with high HIV viral load in mothers (p<0.0001). The MTCT rate in Constanta was 4% for HIV, 0 % for HBV, and 0.8% for syphilis.
