Education: 1999 Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Occupational Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. 1996 Master of Public Health (MPH) in Occupational Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Work experience: 20 years and currently he is Professor in Community medicine, Department of Community and Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, Pathumthani, Thailand. Research awards: 1. Young Asian Scientist Awards for paper “Study of occupational stress among workers in watchmaker industry in Thailand” in 17th Asian Conference on Occupational Health, Taiwan. November 1-4, 2002.

Abstract

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN is one of the fastest growing groups of countries in the world. In 2015, ASEAN Community will be established. The ASEAN Community is comprised of three pillars, namely the ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Socio- Cultural Community. Movement of workforce will be freely within ASEAN countries after ASEAN community establishment. Each country in ASEAN has different level of health protection policy for workers. Learning about occupational health and safety system among ASEAN countries would be useful to improve health protection policy for worker in each ASEAN country. Objectives of this study were to review and compare occupational health and safety systems among ASEAN countries. Data regarding occupational health and safety law, main agencies who were responsible for occupational health and safety, and occupational health and safety programs in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand were reviewed and compared. Results of occupational health and safety system in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand were reported. Some aspects of occupational health and safety systems in those countries were similar. Some of them were different. Results of this study can be used to improve occupational health and safety system in each ASEAN country to protect health of ASEAN workers in the future
