Special Issue: Cell Apoptosis

Cell apoptosis, is an intrinsic cellâ€Âsuicide programme that ensures the physiological condition of the tissues and safeguards the organism by eliminating unwanted cells. As a protective measure of the body apoptosis also supports in eliminating cells of unidentified or foreign origin such as tumor cells.

It is an evolutionarily conserved and highly regulated process of non-functional cells death. Apoptosis, a genetically regulated cell suicide, is an energy-requiring process that can be observed throughout the animal and plant kingdoms. It is the process of programmed cell death which usually occurs in multicellular organisms and the biochemical events lead to characteristic alteration in cell morphology followed by cell death. There is some evidence that certain symptoms of "apoptosis" such as endonuclease activation can be spuriously induced without engaging a genetic cascade, but most likely fact is that true apoptosis and programmed cell death should be genetically mediated.
