Special Issue: Frontiers in Biotechnology

With ever increasing demand for energy and commodity chemicals there is a paradigm shift away from gas and coal towards cleaner energy products via green conversion routes. With biotechnological advancements, different microbial varieties which were earlier used only for production of therapeutics and recombinant enzymes are now being utilized for the synthesis of renewable fuels and specialty chemicals. Today, diverse microbial varieties pertaining to bacterial, yeast and algal species are being selectively tuned for such production with process scale up from laboratory to industrial level.

This special issue is focused on the recent trends in biotechnology with topics including (but not limited to) tools and techniques for characterization, strain improvement, adaptation strategies, and the use of microbial varieties as cell factories for production of renewable fuels and chemicals.
