About the Journal

Steroid hormone receptors

They are intracellular receptors found in nucleus or cytosol. Steroid hormones exert variety of effects on growth, development and behavioral functions. These hormones binding to specific intracellular receptor proteins that function as both signal transducers and transcription factors to modulate expression of target genes. The best studied steroid hormone receptors are members of the nuclear receptor subfamily 3 (NR3).

Chemical secreted or excreted by an insect into its environment in order to transmit messages and signals among the members of same species. These chemicals act like hormone and trigger the copulatory behavior of an insects as well as mammals and also used to signal the presence of danger are known as Pheromones.

Non-Mammalian steroids

Vertebrates such as fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and birds has different mode of action of a hormone include functional morphology of steroidogenic tissues, and biological effects of steroid hormones. Sometimes Non-Mammalian steroids can also be helpful in human therapy such as natural and synthetic steroids from vertebrates, which interact with androgen receptors to increase muscle and bone synthesis.

Condition in which body is exposed to excess of cortisol hormone for a longer time duration due to either steroid therapy (cortisol-like medication) or excessive cortisol produce by adrenaline gland. This condition is known as Cushing's syndrome considered as a hormonal disorder associated with upper body obesity, hypertension, Severe fatigue and muscle weakness.

Terpenoids are organic chemicals that produce naturally by many plants and are derived from terpenes. This provides plants their own distinct aroma including the cannabis. Widely used terpenoids are the cannabinoids found in cannabis, the curcuminoids found in turmeric and salvinorin A in the plant Salvia divinorum. Hence the steroids in plants are biologically produced from terpenoid precursors and sometimes they can be added to proteins to enhance their attachment to the cell membrane.

Hormonal Disorders

A hormonal imbalance that occurs as an allergic reaction in the estrogen and progesterone levels called as hormonal disorders. E.g: Acromegaly, Addison's Disease, Adrenal Cancer, Adrenal Disorders, Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer. It plays a vital role in diabetes, thyroid disease, growth disorders, sexual dysfunction, and a host of other hormone-related disorders.

Even when only one unbalanced hormone is present, it may result in Weight gain, Insomnia, Fibrosis, Foggy memory, Night Sweats, Low Libido. hormone can lead to physical and psychological side effects. hese problems include breast development among men, and facial hair growth, menstrual problems and a deepened voice in women. The possible long-term health effects can be serious: liver tumors, abnormal cholesterol levels and heart disease, and stunted height among adolescents

Hormonal Therapy

Hormone therapy is the use of hormones in medical treatment. Treatment with hormone antagonists may also referred to as hormonal therapy or antihormone therapy. The most general classes of hormone therapy are oncologic hormone therapy and hormone replacement therapy, of which there are various kinds (e.g., for menopause, for male menopause, or for gender change).

Hormone therapy is another form of systemic therapy. It is most often used as an adjuvant therapy to help reduce the risk of the cancer coming back after surgery. Hormone therapy for cancer is the use of medicines to block the effects of hormones. It uses one or more female hormones, commonly estrogen and progestin and sometimes testosterone, to treat symptoms of menopause. Hormonal therapy can slow down or prevent cancer cells from growing.

Sex Hormone

The steroid hormones that are also called as gonadal hormones. The two main classes of sex hormones are androgens and estrogens. The most important human derivatives are testosterone and estradiol. Other contexts will include progestogens as a third class of sex steroids, different from androgens and estrogens. Progesterone is the important and only naturally-occurring sex hormone. Androgens are considered as "male sex hormones" with masculinizing effects, while estrogens and progestogens are considered as "female sex hormones" albeit at different levels.

Steroid Transformation

The transformations that occur after steroids intake called as Steroid Transformations. These are the oral steroids that are taken by body builders and fitness trainers. The main side effect of oral steroids is osteoporosis, weight gain and getting infections.

Steroids are one of a large group of chemical substances classified by a specific carbon structure. Steroids include drugs used to relieve swelling and inflammation, such as prednisone and cortisone; vitamin D; and some sex hormones, such as testosterone and estradiol. Most steroids bind to cellular receptor that then traverses to the nucleus of the cell and causes a change in the expression of specific genes in the cell.

Steroids and Alcohol

Steroids can be made of both plant and animal extracts. Alcohol has a negative impact on the diet. Alcohol and Steroids are hepatoxic in nature. They cause severe allergic reactions. Steroids and Alcohol cause indigestion and stomach problems.

Both alcohol and steroids can potentially upset your stomach it is possible that drinking alcohol while taking prednisone (Deltasone) might increase the risk of stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal bleeding, as both substances can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Prednisone is used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. For instance, prednisone is sometimes used to treat ulcerative colitis, and some people find that alcohol can worsen their ulcerative colitis symptoms.

Oral Steroids

Steroids which are given orally called as Oral Steroids. Their mode of action is non-narcotic and anti-inflammatory and treated for back pain. These are prescribed medicines to treat Cancers. These are used as short course. The risk is more when taken higher doses. The main side effect of oral steroids is osteoporosis, weight gain and getting infections.

Oral steroids are powerful medicines to reduce the swelling and inflammation of airways. They are usually used during a severe asthma episode. Oral steroids can be pills or liquid. The side effects of oral steroids are increased appetite weight gain, stomach irritation, facial hair, thinning of the bones. Mostly oral steroids are avoided after 14days.

Illegal Steroids

Steroids that are taken illegally for muscular growth and atheletic performance without doctor’s prescription. Anabolic steroids are taken intramuscular, tablets, creams or gels applied on skin. Side effects of anabolic steroids are hypertension and heart attacks. Physical effects are reduced sperm count, infertility, shrunken testicles, severe acne etc. Example: Boldenone, Testosterone, Dromostanolone, Dihydrotestosterone, Methenolone, Norethandrolone, Oxymetholone, Clostebol.

When steroids are taken illegally it causes some side effects acne, premature balding or hair loss, weight gain, mood swings, aggression and problems while sleeping. Mainly steroids are taken illegally to improve their athletic performance and to increase their muscle size

Nasal Steroids

Steroids that are taken through nose in the form of sprays called as Nasal Steroids. These are classified based on the way of treatment. These are effective in controlling the allergic inflammation in the nose. These are used to treat first line nasal symptoms of hay fewer or allergic rhinitis. Example: Nasal corticosteroids. Example: Androstenedione and Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone

Nasal steroids are not like body-building, or anabolic, steroids. This type of steroids helps to control inflammation, in this case in the nose. Nasal steroids take at least several days to become fully effective, so they should be used on a daily basis for the best relief of symptoms. It should be sprayed in the nose and pointed away from the septum, or midline of the nose. The side effects are dryness, burning, stinging and nosebleeds

Steroid Myopathy

It is a fatal disease that cause muscle weakness. Glucocorticoid-induced myopathy is the most common type of drug-induced myopathy. It is mostly seen in proximal muscles of the neck upper and lower limbs. Example: Corticosteroids.

Steroid myopathy is damage to the muscle fibers caused by treatment with corticosteroids, such as prednisone, cortisone, dexamethasone and fludrocortisone or overproduction of steroids associated with Cushing's disease. Myopathy causes changes in muscle fibers, including atrophy (shrinkage), lipid (fatty) deposits, necrotic (dead) areas and increased interstitial (connective) tissue between fibers. It may have severe damage to the muscles while the muscles appear normal in size. Chronic steroid myopathy is much more variable and can occur weeks, month or years after first treatment or continued treatment.

Female Steroids

Steroids that are secreted by female organs called as Female Steroids. These are also called as ovarian hormones. Oxandrolone is also called as “The Girl Steroid”. The main steroidal hormones are Oxandrolone, Primabolan, Stanozolol.

Female Steroids like estrogens and progesterone are small, hydrophobic molecules that are transported in the blood bound to a serum globulin. Estrogen group of steroid hormones which promote the development and maintenance of female characteristics of the body. Estrogen hormones play an essential role in the growth and development of female secondary sexual characters.

Steroids in Pregnancy

They are mostly used in pregnancy. It does not harm the child and the mother. It is usually given to bear the stress of the labour pains. It is used to prevent osteoporosis. They are transferred in small amounts to the baby in breast milk.

When pregnant women are given steroid injections, the medication travels to the baby’s body and lungs through their bloodstream and develop baby’s lungs. This gives many preterm babies a much better chance of survival. Cortisol is produced in the fetus in the late stages of pregnancy to help the lungs develop, preparing the baby for life outside the womb. Synthetic glucocorticoids, which replicate the effects of natural cortisol, are given in anticipation of preterm birth to reduce the risk of these problems.

Cortico Steroids

Corticosteroids are a class of chemical substances that include steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex of vertebrates as well as the synthetic analogues of these hormones. Corticosteroids are involved in a wide range of physiological processes, including stress response, immune response, regulation of inflammation, carbohydrate metabolism, protein catabolism, blood electrolyte levels, and behavior. E.g. Corticosterone, Cortisone, Aldosterone.

Systemic corticosteroids refer to corticosteroids that are given orally or by injection and distribute throughout the body. Corticosteroids also suppress your immune system, which can help control conditions in which your immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. Corticosteroid medications are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, asthma and allergies

Anabolic Steroids

These are also called as Anabolic androgenic steroids. These drugs have a structural similarities. Anabolic steroids also have androgenic and virilizing properties. These were indentified in 1930’s and are widely used in therapeutic

medicine to stimulate muscle growth and appetite. Anabolic steroids are drugs that are chemically related to the main male hormone testosterone. They are best known for their effects on building muscle (called anabolic). Anabolic steroids have dangerous physical, mental, and emotional side effects. These may be more dangerous in young adults because they can stop growth. In women, they can cause permanent changes in the voice and genitals. Anabolic steroids come in various forms, including pills, creams, patches, tablets, injections or drops. Anabolic steroids are used as “performance-enhancing drugs.”

Hormone Epinephrine

Epinephrine is an adrenal hormone and a neurotransmitter found in vertibrates and protozoans. They are also produced at the ends of sympathetic neurons as chemical mediators for conveying the nerve impulses to effector organs. Epinephrine come under a group of monoamines called the catecholamines. It is produced in neurons of the central nervous system and in the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine.

Gyno Steroids

Steroids that change the physic from male to female. That condition is called as Gynecomastia. This takes place due to hormonal imbalance (estrogen). Progestrone will also play major role. Surgery is only remedy for Gynecomastia. E.g. Equipoise, Dianabol, Dihydrotestosterone.

Gynecomastia is simply a condition in-which the chest of a man begins to take female shape; as is evident by the name itself as Gynecomastia means “woman breast.” In most cases a hormonal imbalance causes the problem and estrogen buildup is almost always the culprit but progesterone can also play a key role. There is often a Gynecomastia form known as Pseudogynecomastia that affects many men but this is somewhat of a misguided term.

Neuroactive steroids

Neuroactive steroids are also called as neurosteroids. They are endogenous steroids that rapidly alter neuronal excitability through interaction with ligand-gated ion channels and other cell surface receptors. Neuroactive steroid refers to steroids that are synthesized by an endocrine gland that reach the brain through the bloodstream and have effects on brain function. Neurosteroids have a wide range of potential clinical applications from sedation to treatment of epilepsy and traumatic brain injury. Ganaxolone is a synthetic analog of the endogenous neurosteroid. Allopregnanolone is under investigation for the treatment of epilepsy.

Steroids Addiction

A condition in which a person who cannot live without taking steroids is called as Steroid Addiction. The symptoms of this condition are physical problems, change in mood, and steal to obtain the drug and Physical Deterioration. E.g: Corticosteroids, Female sex hormones, Steroids.

The use of anabolic steroids is addictive in terms of the associated lifestyle and the pursuit of the effects that they produce. This includes issues of self-perception and the reality of increased muscle mass and body size. Steroid abusers may become addicted to the drugs, to develop their muscles and body shape.

Synthetic Steroids

Steroids that can be prepared are called as Synthetic Steroids. There are a variety of synthetic steroids in the body (Glucocorticoids, Mineralocorticoid, Oestrogens, etc). They have particular functions to perform. Danazol is a synthetic steroid with diverse biologic effects. It also has immune regulatory effects.

Advances in Steroids Detection

Steroids that can be detected during analysis or doping test. The advance techniques used to detect steroids are mass spectrometry, bioassays, metabolite synthesis. The main specimen used for the detection is urine. These have ergogenic effects and are used to increase muscular strength, size and cosmetic look.

Liquid Steroids

Steroids that can be administered in the form of pills or liquid called as Oral Steroids. They are powerful drugs used to reduce swelling and inflammation of lungs. They are used during severe asthma. Oral corticosteroids have serious side effects if used for long time. Egs: Prednisolone, Prednisone.

Advances in Steroids Treatment

They are naturally occurring substances that help in controlling many functions. They can be made artificially which are also called as Drugs. They can be used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis, hives, Asthma, Ocular Inflammation, Lung Cancer, leukemia and Hepatic failure.

Catabolic Steroids

They are also called as corticosteroids and has variety of medicinal uses. They are quite complicated when compared to anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids effects in breakdown of muscular strength. Cortisone and prednisone are the most common catabolic steroids. Cortisone is used to cure skin allergies. Prednisone is used to cure rheumatoid arthritis.

Epidural Steroids

These are the Corticosteroids given through injections into the epidural space to reliev pain. Epidural steroid injections are given to patients with chronic pain due to lumbar disc herniation, degenerative disc disease and lumbar spinal stenosis. The analgesic effect is temporary, but can be an effective nonsurgical treatment. E.g: Betamethasone, Methylprednisolone, Triamcinolone.

Steroids Supplements

Steroids that we get in diet are called as Steroid Supplements. Vitamins and amino acids are the main steroid supplements that we get apart from the normal diet. All anabolic steroids come under steroid Supplements. E.g: Nandrolone, Oxandrolone, Oxymetholone, Stanozolol etc.
