In 1990 a voluntary sentinel reporting system for equine infectious diseases called “Equinella” was initiated by the Equine Clinic of the University of Berne, the Swiss Association of Equine Practitioners and the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office (FVO). The objective of our study was to analyze the data from that system as a basis for future improvements in equine disease monitoring.Initially, approximately 42 institutions distributed throughout the country (practitioners, clinics, university hospitals, laboratories, the national stud and the Swiss army) reported fortnightly clinical or/and laboratory diagnosis of specific equine infectious diseases.
