    Prevention of the disease is by separating food and water from faeces and by proper sanitation measures. There is no vaccine. There are two treatment options depending on the location of the infection. If present in tissues is treated with either metronidazole, tinidazole, nitazoxanide, dehydroemetine or chloroquine, while luminal infection is treated with diloxanide furoate or iodoquinoline. The overall frequency of intestinal parasites was 65%. Entamoeba histolytica was detected by the coproantigen test, and the PCR showed that Entamoeba dispar predominated in the population. In contrast, morphometric analysis was important for identifying Entamoeba hartmanni.

  • Non Pathogenic Intestinal Protozoa

    Many intestinal protozoa parasites inhabit the gastrointestinal tract of humans. However, majority of them are non-pathogenic commensals or only result in mild disease while a few of them such as Cryptosporidium parvum (CP), Entamoeba histolytica (EH) and Giardia lamblia (GL) are pathogenic. Entamoeba histolytica serves as a paradigm for invasive colonic protozoal infection. The key to diagnosis and treatment of amebiasis is knowledge of the epidemiologic risk factors and clinical manifestations, a rational approach to diagnosis, and an understanding of the sites of action and uses of anti-amebic drugs.
