  • Ocular Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic relapsing disease of the facial skin. It is characterised by recurrent episodes of facial flushing with persistent erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules. Ocular rosacea is usually bilateral and causes a foreign-body sensation. Ocular rosacea affects adult males and females equally, with one study reporting an average age at presentation of 56 years. It is uncommon in children and generally starts after the age of 30 years. It usually occurs in patients with existing rosacea but it can be the first sign of the disease. Ocular rosacea tends to occur in patients with facial flushing.

When treating ocular rosacea, a stepwise approach can be undertaken, using first lid hygiene and artificial tears, followed by topical and oral anti-inflammatory medications, with late surgical intervention as required.Antibiotics like Tetracyclines, Erythromycin, Topical Metronidazole, Topical Azithromycin. Retinoids like Vitamin A derivatives, such as oral isotretinoin and topical tretinoin, have been found effective in reducing the inflammatory lesions in rosacea. Researches found that  topical metronidazole and azelaic acid are effective for treatment of Ocular Rosacea. There is some evidence that oral metronidazole and tetracycline are effective. More well-designed, randomized controlled trials are required to provide better evidence of the efficacy and safety of other rosacea therapies. Researches are happening in National Rosacea Society to know the exact cause of Ocular Rosacea.
