    Schistosomiasis, is a parasitic disease caused by trematode flatworms of the genus Schistosoma. Larval forms of the parasites, which are released by freshwater snails, penetrate the skin of people in the water.

  • Schistosomiasis

    Symptoms for the disease vary depending on the type of worm involved and the location of  the parasite inside the body, and can include initial itching and rash at infection site, painful or bloody urine, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea, anemia, fever, chills and muscle aches. Globally, 200,000 deaths are attributed to schistosomiasis annually.

     Treatment:

    Safe and effective medication is available for treatment of both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis. Praziquantel, a prescription medication, is taken for 1-2 days to treat infections caused by all Schistosoma species.
