  • Primary immunodeficiency

     Disease pathophysiology:

Primary immunodeficiency disorders — also called primary immune disorders or primary immunodeficiency — weaken the immune system, allowing infections and other health problems to occur more easily. Many people with primary immunodeficiency are born missing some of the body's immune defenses, which leaves them more susceptible to germs that can cause infections.

     Disease statistics:

There are more than 200 different forms of primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDDs) affecting only about 500,000 people. These rare genetic diseases may be chronic, debilitating, and costly. Since the 1970s, NIAID-supported investigators have been examining the causes and complications of PIDDs to improve the lives of patients and families.

      Disease treatment:

The treatment for each immunodeficiency disorder will be tailored to its specific conditions. For example, AIDS causes several different infections. Your doctor will prescribe medications that are appropriate for each infection. If your bone marrow isn’t producing enough lymphocytes, your doctor might order a bone marrow transplant.
