campylobacteriosis is an infection caused by campylobacter bacterium. It is one of the food and water borne disease, and most common bacterial infection seen in humans. Infected people suffer with diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever within a week. In the case of suppressed immune system infection may spread to bloodstream that may turn fatal.
It is estimated that for every 100,000 persons 14 cases are diagnosed with the infection. Though the infection is non lethal approximately 76 persons die with campylobacter infection worldwide and United States has about 14,905 deaths due to diarreal diseases every year.
Azithromycin and fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin) are commonly used for treatment of these infections, but resistance to fluoroquinolones is common.
