Klebsiella pneumonia is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium. Although found in the normal flora of the mouth, skin, and intestines, it can cause destructive changes to human and animal lungs if aspirated to the alveoli resulting in bloody sputum.

Some experts recommend the use of meropenem for patients with ESBL producing Klebsiella meropenem produces the best bacterial clearing.
