Myiasis is an ephemoral, self-limiting infection. The vast majority of cases are not fatal, and many are treated at home using occlusion methods not altogether different from those available in a medical setting. Given these characteristics, it is difficult to determine either the prevalence or incidence of myiasis, or even the number of people who will experience an infestation of fly larvae at some point during their lives. While global statistics are lacking, data were available for Panama. One source notes that six out of seven Panamanian men will contract myiasis caused by D. hominis, the human botfly.
