The university came into existence through an Act of Parliament which received the assent of the President on January 8, 1997. The purpose of the act was to establish and incorporate a teaching university for the promotion and development of Hindi language and literature, through teaching and research, with a view to enabling Hindi to achieve greater functional efficiency and recognition as a major international language. The establishment of the university was the long conclusion of a resolutions passed by the First World Hindi Conference organized in Nagpur in the year 1975 to establish an international Hindi university at Wardha, the land where Mahatma Gandhi experimented all programmes dear to his heart. There are eight Schools in the University: School of Language, School of Literature, School of Culture, School of Translation & Interpretation, School of Humanities and Social Science, School of Creativity,School of Management, School of Education. Besides this, the Distance Education programme of the University is actively involved in spreading education among students in all the areas of the country. Three centers, namely Baba Sahab Ambedkar Center for Dalit and Tribal Studies, Mahatma Gandhi Fuji Guruji Center for Ahinsa and Peace Studies and Bhadant Anand Kaushalyayan Center for Budhhist Studies have also been established.
