The National Transplant Organization (ONT) is a Spanish public body responsible for transplant issues. Its promoter and current director is the nephrologist Rafael Matesanz.
It is a coordinating body of a technical nature, founded in 1989 and belonging to the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs, responsible for developing the functions related to the collection and clinical use of organs, tissues and cells. After its creation, Spain has gone from 14 donors per million population (pmp) to 35.1 pmp donors in 2005. That is, from being in the lower-middle of the donation indices in Europe, to have by far the Higher index, not of Europe, but of the world.
To carry out these functions, it acts as an operational technical unit, which, following the principles of cooperation, effectiveness and solidarity, fulfills its mission of coordinating and facilitating the activities of donation, extraction, preservation, distribution, exchange and transplantation of organs, tissues And cells in the Spanish Health System as a whole.
The ONT acts as a service agency for the National Health System as a whole, promoting the continuous increase in the availability of organs, tissues and cells for transplantation. It guarantees the most appropriate and correct distribution according to the degree of technical knowledge and the ethical principles of equity that must govern the transplantation activity. Its main objective is therefore the promotion of altruistic donation with the sole purpose of which the Spanish citizen who needs a transplant has the greater and better possibilities of obtaining it.
