University of Gour Banga

The University of Gour Banga (UGB) has been established by the West Bengal Act XXVI of 2007 at Malda, West Bengal. It is one of the two new State Universities established by the Government of West Bengal to address to the concerns of equity and access to quality higher education by people in less educationally developed districts which have a less Graduate Enrolment Ratio. The University, with its territorial jurisdiction of the three districts (Malda, Dakshin Dinajpur and Uttar Dinajpur) of the northern part of West Bengal, has been initiated its activities from the academic year beginning 2008 in keeping with the philosophy of achieving and maintaining the highest levels of academic excellence, sensitivity to equity and access in enrolment and recruitment and emerging as a premier national educational and research institution in the country. The University has nearly 33 acres campus, situated adjacent to the headquarter English Bazaar in the district of Malda, West Bengal State. It is claimed that UGB is one of the first state University to be accredited by the NAAC in a short time among the new ones. The University is also recognized by the UGC under section 2(F) and 12(B). The main objective of the University is integrating the components of Teaching, Research, Innovation, Training and Skill Development with an aspiration to excel in post graduate and research programmess. The University offers the programs under the following three dominant faculties: Arts and Commerce, Sciences, and Education & Law. Currently the University is running with 21 Departments and offering 1 Dual degree programme, 20 Master degree programmes, 18 Research programs. Surabhi Bandyopadhyay, the former vice-chancellor of Netaji Subhas Open University, became the first vice chancellor of the university, while the former registrar of University of North Bengal, Tapash Kumar Chattopadhyay, became the first acting registrar, all in 2008. Gopa Dutta was the second vice chancellor. The former vice chancellor was Achintya Biswas, who was the head of the Department of Bengali of Jadavpur University. Dr. Bikash Mukhopadhyay of Burdwan University is the registrar. The University also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, as well as administrative services. Together with the coordination of the faculties and support from the bright students the University ranks 316 in the country and 8421 in the world. The University of Gour Banga involves in different projects and workshops. It participated in a workshop, “Hands-on Training Workshop on Microbiological Tools and Techniques” from 3rd to 7th March in the year of 2017. The workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology. This Department has already started its Ph D as well as M Phil research in the field of Microbiology (Medical, Food and Environment), and many students in the catchments showed great interest in Microbiology research. Researchers in microbiology and allied field of biomedical science participated in Isolation of bacteria from various samples, bacterial characterization (cultural, morphological and biochemical), antibiotic susceptibility testing (different in vitro methods); Plasmid DNA isolation, DNA and protein gel electrophorsis; detection and estimation of bioactive phytocomponents.
