Atherosclerosis is defined as a condition which affects arterial blood vessels because of inflammatory reaction of WBCs in the walls of arteries. This is promoted by LDL without sufficient removal of fats and cholesterol by macrophages through functional HDL. It causes hardening or loss of elasticity of medium or large arteries.
