The electrostatically positive surface of the protein binds to the negatively charged DNA. The amino acid residues of the protein involved in DNA binding are Arg51, Arg54, Gln68 from the second helix-turn-helix DNA binding motif of the Lrp protein; they were found to interact with their positively charged side chains with the negative DNA backbone.
