Illustrates the mechanism of RNA interference. siRNAs are either synthetically manufactured and directly applied to the cell, or are produced by the cleavage of larger double stranded RNAs by the enzyme DICER. The siRNAs are incorporated into the RISC complex where they bind to complementary mRNA sequences. Once bound, the target mRNA is cleaved and is no longer functional. |
