Biography
Emeritus Professor Roger Holmes received his PhD from the University of Queensland in 1967 and a higher doctorate (DSc) from Griffith University in 1978. Dr Holmes undertakes research as an Emeritus Professor at Griffith University (Brisbane Australia) and as an Adjunct Scientist at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (San Antonio, Texas USA). Previous academic positions included Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer posts at La Trobe University in Melbourne (1970-74), and senior academic and adminstrative positions at Griffith University in Brisbane (1974-1995), including Professorial (1998-1995) and Deputy President (Research) (1991-1995) positions. Australian University President (Vice-Chancellor) positions were held at Northern Territory University (1996) in Darwin and the University of Newcastle (1996-2004). His research included biochemical, genetic, evolutionary and bioinformatic studies of several vertebrate gene families, including those involved in alcohol and aldehyde metabolism (ADH1-7, ALDH1A1, ALDH1A2, ALDH1A3, ALDH1B1, ALDH1L1, ALDH1L2, ALDH2, ALDH3A1, ALDH3A2, ALDH3B1 and ALDH3B2); lipid metabolism (lipases, including LIPC, LIPG, LPL, LIPI, LIPH, LIPA, LIPP, LIPR, PNPLA1, ATGL, PNPLA3, PNPLA4, PNPLA5); lipid and retinoic acid transport proteins (GPIHBP1; FABP1-12; RBP1, RBP2, RBP5 and RBP7); M13 neutral endopeptidases (KELL; MME; MMEL1); and endothelin-converting enzymes and receptors (ECE1, ECE2, EDNRA, EDNRB and EDNRC). Based on this research and fellowship training, he has received several awards and honors, such as a Commonwealth Postgraduate Research Award (1965-67 at the University of Queensland), Fullbright Postdoctoral Fellowship (1967-69 at Yale University, USA), Queensland University Postdoctoral Fellowship (1969-70), Australia-Japan Exchange Program Award (1988) and an Australian Government Centenary Medal (2002). He has served on the editorial board of scientific journals, including Mouse Genome (1986-1990); Developmental Genetics (1987-1990); and Addiction Biology (1995-2004), and is currently an Associate Editor of 3Biotech. As of 2014, he has authored 180 research articles and books.
