Yuming Zhao
Professor
Department of Chemistry
Memorial University
Canada
Biography

Yuming Zhao obtained his PhD in 2002 under the supervision of Prof. Rik R. Tykwinski at the University of Alberta, working on the synthesis of cross-conjugated oligo(enyne)s and characterization of their electronic and nonlinear optical properties. From 2002 to 2004, he was an NSERC postdoctoral fellow, working with Prof. James M. Tour at Rice University. His postdoctoral research focused on the synthesis of nanoscale molecular vehicles (“nancars”) and fullerene-oligomer derivatives. In 2004, he joined the Department of Chemistry, Memorial University, as an assistant professor, and he is now an associate professor at Memorial University. His research interests range from the synthesis of novel pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene derivatives, pi-conjugated oligomers and shape-persistent macrocycles, fullerene-dendrimerderivatives, to the design of functional chemo-/bio-sensors and functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes. He was the recipient of PetroCanada Young Innovator Award in 2007.

Research Interest

1. Development of molecular materials and devices based on redox-active and fluorescent organic compounds and macromolecules.
2. Non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes.
3. Design and synthesis of functional receptors for carbohydrates, fullerenes, and metal ions.
4. Understanding the fundamental reaction mechanisms and structure-property relationships for tetrathiafulvalene derivatives.

Hong Kong
Biography

Dr Yuen is a Biomedical Scientist with professional qualification in Medical Laboratory Science. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, responsible for teaching and research in Biological Areas. With particular interests in Urology and Cancer, Dr Yuen has focused his research in Bladder cancer and Renal stones which are both considered as occupational diseases associated with the usage of environmental chemical contaminants. Much of his research work was focused on studying the pharmacology and chemistry of a medicinal mushroom known as Ganoderma lucidum, underlying the aim of discovering bioactive natural / herbal ingredients for cancer treatment. Besides, Dr Yuen is currently collaborating with a Industrial company to investigate the usage of nano-technologies in facilitating infection controls in healthcare settings and community.

Research Interest

Biology and chemical carcinogenesis of bladder cancer and its therapeutic strategies, Pathophysiology of renal stones, Pharmacology and chemistry of natural and herbal products, Applications of nano-technologies in infectious control
