Correlation of CD4 counts with oral and systemic manifestations in HIV patients

Abstract:

Objectives: HIV infection is a major health problem in India. The importance of oral lesions as clinical features have been reported worldwide. However, there are very few reports on correlation of systemic and oral manifestations of HIV seropositive individuals with CD4 count in Indian subcontinent especially the western region. Materials and Methods: Study population comprised of 100 confirmed seropostive patients presenting to Kirpa foundation a non-governmental organization in Vadodara, Gujrat who were not under any antiretroviral therapy. The oral lesions were diagnosed based on clinical manifestation using international criteria and CD4 count was determined within maximum 1 week of oral examination. Data was entered into database and analyzed using SPSS software. Oral and systemic manifestations of HIV positive patients were recorded and correlated with CD4 counts. Results: It was also found that decrease in CD4 count is associated with a wide range of oral and systemic manifestations and can be used as prognostic marker for immune suppression. Conclusion: CD4 count can be used as prognostic marker for progression of disease in AIDS patient so that early antiretroviral treatment can be administered to prevent further aggravation of disease process and infections.
