  • Trench Mouth

The term trench mouth comes from World War I, when many soldiers in the trenches developed the infection. Trench mouth is now rare, although minor gum infections probably occur relatively commonly. The severe form usually affects only people with an impaired immune system. The infection is caused by an abnormal overgrowth of the bacteria that normally exist harmlessly in the mouth. Poororal hygiene usually contributes to the development of trench mouth, as do physical or emotional stress, poor diet, and lack of sleep. 42% of adults use different type of medications to get some relief from dental problems in Singapore.

If there is any extensive damage, the individual may need surgery to help heal this damage. The goals of treatment are to cure the infection and relieve symptoms. Good oral hygiene is vital to the treatment of trench mouth.Brush and floss your teeth thoroughly as often as possible, at least twice a day and preferably after each meal and at bedtime. The infection usually responds to treatment. The management of trench mouth is highly effective, and thorough healing can occur in only several weeks. But, healing can take longer if the immune system is compromised.
