The total number of PMs implanted in 2007 in Belgium was 10,914 i.e. 10.3 implantations per 10,000 inhabitants. Of these 7,487 were first implantations, i.e. 7.1 per 10,000 inhabitants. The mean age of patients at their first implantation has slightly increased over the period 2002 to 2007 and has reached 75.2 years for men and 78.1 years for women in 2007. In that year, 85% of all first implantations in men occurred in patients older than 65 years versus 92% in women. There are considerable differences in crude implantation rates between the 43 Belgian arrondissements. Primo implantation rates range from 4.2 to 12.3 per 10,000 inhabitants in the arrondissements Mouscron and Veurne respectively. Within Belgium, this variation in implant rates is clearly related to regional demographic and socioeconomic factors: high shares of the elderly and male population, low income levels and low percentages of foreigners go along with high implantation rates. Adjusting for these factors has the effect that the observed differences in primo implantation rates between the arrondissements
