Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder which enhances in the overproduction of thyroid hormones. It is also known as toxic diffuse goiter, in which thyroid gland produces excessive hormones. The symptoms of this disorder are diarrhea, weight loss, muscle weakness, heat intolerance, itching and insomnia.
Hyperthyroidism is treated with Surgery or Antithyroid medications or Radioactive iodine. This treatment is aimed at controlling the overactive thyroid. In some cases the disease disappears completely after several years or months. it is 4 to 8 times more common in women than men.
The amount of iodine in the diet can influence the hormone synthesis activity in the thyroid gland. An analysis from a current study suggested that the incidence of Graves disease was increasing in women but not in men between 1997 and 2001.
