Gliomas are brain tumors arising from glial cells. 80% of gliomas are malignant in nature. Astrocytoma’s, Oligodendroglia’s, and Ependymomas are the three different types of gliomas.
Epidemiology and Treatment
Gliomas are characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, speech difficulty, memory disturbance, seizures, and vision problems. Treatment usually includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Temozolamide is an effective drug used in chemotherapy for high grade tumors.
Causes and Statistics
The exact causes of gliomas are not known. Hereditary genetic disorders such as neurofibromatoses (type 1 and type 2) and tuberous sclerosis complex are known to predispose to their development. Different oncogenes can cooperate in the development of gliomas. In Singapore, brain cancer mortality rate was about 1.3% in males among all cancer deaths.
