Alzheimer's Association of Kenya

Alzheimer’s Association of Kenya was started in 2007(Nairobi, Kenya) by caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients with the aim to initiate a support group to help other caregivers affected by the disease. With time the needs of the caregivers have changed as there are numerous more challenges being faced by the caregivers and thus there was need to change the organization to become a Non- Governmental Association. In January 2016, Alzheimer’ and Dementia Organisation Kenya was created.

Alzheimer's Association of Kenya is a non -profit organization dedicated to educate the patients, caregivers and the general community on Alzheimer’s disease so as to reduce stigma. Their main goal is to provide Dementia and Alzheimer’s trainings to caregivers and healthcare experts and the public in general. Advocating for the inclusion of Dementia and Alzheimer’s care in the vital government health strategies, providing a range of programs that address issues of accessibility, affordability & quality Dementia and Alzheimer’s care.

Creating awareness by talking about the disease both within the family setting &the general public. This is important so that we can have communities that are Dementia and Alzheimer’s friendly. These benefits immensely in reducing stigma. Through awareness we are also advocating for the addition of Dementia and Alzheimer’s care in the key Government health strategies, providing a scope of programs that address issues of convenience, affordability & quality Dementia and Alzheimer’s care.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive mental weakening that can happen in old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain.

It not only devastates the individual suffering from the disease but also ravages the families both psychologically and economically.

Alzheimer's & Dementia Organization Kenya thus helps the caregivers in the following ways:-

1. Creating awareness about the disease

2. Support groups for the caregivers

3. Life coping skills training of the caregivers and their children.

4. Home visits of the affected families

5. Counselling for the affected and their caregivers

Alzheimer's Association of Kenya mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to deliver& enhance care and maintain for all affected; and to decrease the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
