American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM)

The American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) is a personal membership group established in 1980, under the American Hospital Association (AHA) consisting of nearly 6,000 members representing risk management, insurance, law, patient safety, finance and other related professions. ASHRM encourages effective and innovative risk management strategies and professional leadership through education, advocacy, recognition, publications, networking and interactions with leading healthcare organizations and government agencies. ASHRM initiatives desires to develop and implement safe and effective patient care practices, the preservation of financial resources and the maintenance of safe working environments. The focus of the society, ASHRM is to become the leader in advancing safe and trusted healthcare through enterprise risk management. Its mission is to advance patient safety, reduce uncertainty and maximize value through management of risk across the healthcare enterprise. ASHRM has identified four initiatives and subsequent goals that will serve as a guide for its leaders, staff and members. These goals will assist ASHRM in reaching its full potential in bringing healthcare risk management and patient safety to the forefront of the healthcare community, assuring safe and trusted healthcare for everyone. The initiatives and goals include:a)Enterprise Risk Management Goal which is to facilitate effective decision making in the healthcare industry through the application of enterprise risk management. b)Patient Safety Goal that ensures advance patient safety using risk management principles. c) Leadership Goal which tells to be recognized as an influential leader in healthcare enterprise risk management and lastly d)Governance & Operations Goal which eyes to have an helpful governance and operational infrastructure to ensure necessary resources for execution of its strategic plan. The members of the society elect their board of directors.Last year about 18% members of the society voted which is about 200 increase in the number of members from the last year. ASHRM members have faith on the ASHRM leadership to guide the society’s activities, and ensures that they align with ASHRM’s Vision and Mission. To fulfill that responsibility, ASHRM’s Board of Directors periodically revisits ASHRM’s road map to check whether  it continues to advance safe and trusted healthcare. Through careful analysis of industry trends, membership needs and shifts in the HRM profession, the ASHRM Board of Directors has created the ASHRM 2016-2018 Strategic Plan which includes an updated Vision and Mission, with revised Goals.
