Asia-Pacific Society for Medical Virology

The John Bullar Ophthalmological Society is based at the University Of Southampton, UK. Under patronage of HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Dame Mary Fagan and Professor Andrew Lotery, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton, the society aims to foster an environment wherein medical students and junior doctors interested in a career in ophthalmology can actively pursue their goal. Moreover, the society endeavors to educate the general medical population in the area of ophthalmology given its wide multidisciplinary relevance. Their chosen charity is the Gift of Sight Appeal. Prof Andrew Lotery, Patron of the society, is the Director of Research at the Gift of Sight. The motto of the society is “Knowledge Gives Vision”. The John Bullar Ophthalmological Society was founded in December 2011 under presidency of Sohaib Rufai and patronage of Professor Andrew Lotery. The society is named eponymously in honor of John Follet Bullar, Consulting Ophthalmic Surgeon and founder of the Free Eye Hospital of Southampton. John Follet Bullar (1854 – 1929), born in Bassett, Southampton, on May 2nd 1854, John Bullar was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School. He founded the Free Eye Hospital of Southampton in 1889. During the European war he acted as ophthalmic specialist with the rank of Captain RAMC. He was a very skillful operator, and a past-master in the specialty which he had taken up. With all his patients he had a kindly way, and possessed a great gift of pawky humour. The society conducts various exciting national one-day leadership and management course and conferences aimed at medical students and staff.
