Association of American State Geologists

The Association of American State Geologists constitutes a network of chief executives of the state geological surveys in 50 states and Puerto Rico. It was established in 1908, AASG seeks to advance the science and practical application of geology and earth science related to the US and its territories, commonwealths, and possessions. The AASG Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 that supports and operational activities of teaching, research of AASG, which is effective in promoting geological mapping, preservation of geoscience, and other wide efforts, the national scope. The responsibilities of the various state investigations differ from one state to another, depending on the enabling legislation and traditions in which the survey evolved. Almost all functions as a source of basic information for the executive branch of their state governments, legislative and judicial. Some have regulatory responsibilities for water, oil, gas and land reclamation, etc.
