The Medical Genetics has a recent history in Brazil and it started out as a research program in Human Genetics during the early 1950s, mainly by a work shift of Brazilian scientists from genetic studies conducted ondrosophila melanogaster to this new emerging genetic field of research, which is following a worldwide tendency. The Department of Biology, currently Department of Genetics and The Department of volutionary Biology, at the Institute of Biosciences, One of the main pioneers in this field was São Paulo University, followed by other initiatives at the Federal Universities at Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná. The importance of genetics was recognized by the medical community only as of the 60 and onward, after the human cytogenetics advent, and with the introduction of Genetics as a subject in a few medical schools. Nevertheless, Medical Genetics still is regarded as an discipline in many medical schools in Brazil and all over the world.
