European rare earth and actinide Society goals are- Organization of a triennial international conference on f-elements (ICFE) Exchange of professional, technical, industrial and economic information, Promotion of educational and research activities at the European level, Maintenance of close contacts with similar societies and organizations around the World. A rare earth element is one of a set of seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the fifteen lanthanides, as well as scandium and yttrium. Scandium and yttrium are considered rare earth elements because they tend to occur in the same ore deposits as the lanthanides and exhibit similar chemical properties. The actinide series encompasses the 15 metallic chemical elements with atomic numbers from 89 to 103, actinium through lawrencium. The actinide series derives its name from the first element in the series, actinium.
