Modern treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is teamwork led by specialists in rheumatology and orthopaedic surgery with special; training in surgery of arthritis. A group of ten European orthopaedic surgeons with particular interests in this field of surgery took the initiative to establish a European society which founded on September 4, 1979, in Wiesbaden German Federal Republic. It has become the primary platform for exchange of scientific and clinical information in Europe. It is also outstanding forum for interaction between medical doctors, scientists, and people with arthritis/rheumatism, health experts and medical professionals and representatives of the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. In the presence of 39 orthopaedic surgeons from 31 member countries of the European league against rheumatism the society was found under the name ERASS (European Rheumatoid and Arthritis Surgery Society) as a private society of orthopaedic surgeons.

ERASS aim to further scientific and clinical work in rheumatoid arthritis surgery on the European level. It will promote the training of doctors interested in this field and encourage versatile collaboration with all fields of specialization concerned with rheumatology. European rheumatoid society has also gained a reputation of being a most innovative platform for the practicing and gain knowledge particularly with respect to the acquisition of information on novel clinical research Membership is open to orthopaedic experts and professionals trained in rheumatoid arthritis surgery, based on personal application, and sponsored by a referee who should be a member of ERASS or be known personally to a member of the executive committee.
