Irish Mathematical Society (IMS) is the leading professional organization for mathematicians in Ireland. The Company was founded in April 14, 1976, at a meeting inTrinity College, Dublin when a constitution drafted by D McQuillan, John T. Lewis and Trevor West was accepted. The company aims to advance mathematics and mathematical research in Ireland. Its membership is international, but it is mostly mathematicians in universities and other third level institutions in Ireland. It publishes a bulletin of mathematical Irish Society twice a year and manages an annual conference in September, both devoted to mathematical topics of current research on education issues. The Company has a sub-committee to discuss issues and formulate positions on the teaching of mathematics. The Company is a member of the European Mathematical Society. Fergus Gaines Cup is awarded annually by the Company to the best performer in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad (Irmo). The IMS was established in 1976 to promote and expand the knowledge of mathematics and its applications. As part of its mission, the company seeks to improve mathematics education in Ireland, particularly in the third level. The company publishes articles in mathematics education and sponsored presentations on the subject at its annual meetings. This year, the IMS has formed an education committee, chaired by Professor A.G. O Farrell (Maynooth University) that appeals to a wide range of expertise in mathematics education in Ireland.
