Italian Society of Radiology

The Italian Society of Medical Radiology was founded January 5, 1913, in the hospital Maggiore Library in Milan. Founded in 1913, the Italian Society of Radiation Medicine (SIRM) is a scientific association that counts among its members the majority of Italian radiologists, numbering about 8,400 members at the end of 2006. The main objective is to promote the progress of the diagnostic imaging by promoting studies and research on the physical, biological, and clinical safetyrelated, culture and professionally stimulate its members through the development of education and research projects and supporting scientific meetings and seminars. Indeed, it encourages any initiative to improve the professionalism of its members and to improve efficiency of radiology within the health system. SIRM is composed of regional groups that are principally engaged in professional activities and in specific scientific sections, whose main objectives are to disseminate scientific knowledge on diagnostic imaging. Scientists sections cover all radiological interest: chest, breast, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, urogenital, neuro, sports medicine, head and neck and dentomaxillofacial, pediatrics, imaging management, etc. Groups and sections organize annual meetings to discuss and share knowledge and research. In recent years, SIRM began organizing groups of research and sponsoring national research projects, in particular CT-colonography, CT coronary-, CEUS improved in the study of focal liver lesions, imaging and several molecular screening projects. SIRM is organizing a free biennial national congress and the annual scientific meetings and courses. It encourages editorial initiatives and funds scholarships and research grants.
