The society was first established in 1893 from the Botanical Club of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at a meeting held in Rochester, New York, on August 22, 1892.Botanical Society of America (BSA) is a "not-for-benefit" 501 (c) (3) enrolment society whose mission is to: advance herbal science, the field of fundamental science managing the study and investigation into the structure, capacity, improvement, assorted qualities, multiplication, development, and employments of plants and their communications inside the biosphere. To finish this mission, the targets of The Society are to: maintain and give enhanced formal and casual instruction about plants; energize essential plant research; give ability, course, and position explanations concerning plants and biological systems; and foster correspondence inside the expert natural group, and amongst botanists and whatever remains of mankind through productions, gatherings, and boards of trustees.

The broadness of interests of BSA individuals are reflected in the 15 uncommon interest areas of the Society with which all individuals have the chance to wind up partnered. These extraordinary interest areas are the Bryological and Lichenological, Economic, Genetic, Historical, Microbiological, Paleobotanical, Phycological, Developmental and Structural, Ecological, Phytochemical, Pteridological, Systematic, Physiological,Teaching and Tropical Biology Sections. There are likewise four geographic segments (Northeastern, Midcontinent, Southeastern and Pacific).
