Rural sociological Society

The RSS is a professional social science association that promotes the generation, application, and dissemination of sociological knowledge. The Society seeks to enhance the quality of rural life, communities, and the environment. This website is intended to serve all those interested in rural people and places. The rural sociological society (RSS) was officially established on December 29th, 1937. In the Provisional Constitution adopted during the meeting of the Rural Sociology Section of the American Sociological Society at the Claridge Hotel, Atlantic City, New Jersey (December 1937), the RSS was initially named the Rural Sociological Society of America. At the first Annual Meeting of the Rural Sociological Society in Detroit, Michigan (December 1938), Dwight Sanderson gave the first Presidential Address and the Constitution for the Rural Sociological Society was adopted. The RSS Oral History Project is a collective effort to capture the memories, recollections, and insights of members of the Rural Sociological Society. In particular, three goals form the focus of the project:(1) to develop a sense of where rural sociology has been, what progress it has made, and where it is heading;(2) to compare past challenges/issues/opportunities with those of today; and(3) to develop a better understanding of the relationship between sociology and rural sociology.
