Russian society of medical geneticists

Resolution to establish the USSR Scientific Society of Medical Geneticists (FSSMG) was accepted by the founding conference on September 1, 1978. This was preceded by large organization work carried out by the Staff of IMG. Above 100 delegates from all the USSR republics participated at the conference. At that Conference the Society Status was accepted and the Society Board was elected. Later, regional founding conferences were organized in all the USSR republics. The first Assembly of the FSSMG took place in 1984 in Kiev. The second Assembly took place in 1990 in Alma-Ata. In both cases sharply increased interest of people to medical genetic problems was clearly seen: hundreds of specialists, including clinicians, representing all the USSR, participated. Oral and written communications demonstrated profound interest of the participants to all problems of global medical genetics. It was also evident that the training of younger generations of medical geneticists is going on successfully. The proceedings of the assemblies were reflected also in mass media. After disintegration of the USSR the work was started for reanimation of the Society of Medical Geneticists in Russia. In November, 1991 in that Centre the founding conference took place and the resolution was adopted to found the Russian Society of Medical Geneticists (RSMG) – the successor of the same named FSSMG. In 1994 in Moscow the Third Society Conference took place were the new Society Status was adopted. In extensive scientific program 243 specialists participated and the Proceedings were issued. The fourth Society conference was carried out in May, 2000 in Kursk with about 400 participants and broad program. The fifth conference was carried out in 2005 in Ufa with up to 500 participants and obvious increase of molecular genetic communications. The sixth Congress of the RSMG took place in 2010 in Rostov-on-Don. 700 specialists from different areas of medicine participated in this Congress. In organization of all RSMG conferences RCMG of Russian Federation played the leading role. At present approximately 400 persons are members of the Society. RSMG assemblies as its intermediate conferences are important events in the Society showing the results and prospects of further development of medical genetics in Russia.
