Society of Environmental Journalists

The Society of Environmental Journalists is a non-profitable national journalism organization created by the journalist and for the journalists who report to the environmental topics in the news media. The organization says that "SEJ’s aim is to fortify the quality, viability and reach of journalism all over the media to develop public understanding of environmental issues. The Society was founded in 1990 by a small group of award-winning journalists, editors, including reporters, and producers working for USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Turner Broadcasting, National Geographic and Minnesota Public Radio. Today, SEJ's membership contains more than 1,500 academics and journalists working in every kind of news media in the United States, Mexico, Canada and 27 other countries. Society of Environmental Journalists is headquartered in Jenkintown, PA. SEJ's reputation for service, integrity, and excellence has been erected upon annual conferences hosted by eminent universities, scores of regional events, on-line services, unique publications, in-the-newsroom training sessions, and an extensive membership network. As a non-profit educational society, SEJ provides educational opportunities and vital provision to journalists of all media who face the challenging responsibility of covering complex environmental issues. SEJ working and project finances are guaranteed through a combination of basis grants based on SEJ proposals (emphasis on unrestricted support, general), university supports of the annual conference, media company contributions, earned revenue from fees and dues for services (including exhibit, ad space and single use rental of the email distribution listserv) and earnings from individual gifts to the grants. SEJ does not accept gifts or donations from non-media corporations or environmental advocacy groups and government agencies. Activists and public relations professionals are not eligible for membership in SEJ. Everyone is welcomed to participate in SEJ's annual conferences and contribute to SEJ Journal.
