The Danish Gerontological Society

The Danish Gerontological Society (established 1946), In 1972 the main topic was geriatric evaluation and management before an older patient was acknowledged to nursing home. Today the geriatric medicine services have a much more acute approach. Most of the geriatric medicine divisions today have components for acute treatment of older patients, day-hospitals and interdisciplinary teams functioning in hospitals to target and coordinate the treatment of patients with geriatric problems. Furthermore the geriatric medical teams proposal geriatric evaluation and management at home in collaboration with the general practitioners and home-nurses. Beside acute geriatric treatment, rehabilitation and social management of older frail patients, scientific topics of importance are fall prevention, stroke, nutrition, dementia, delirium, incontinence and orthogeriatric medicine.
